A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend and speak at eMetrics in Sydney, Australia. This was the first conference I had attended or spoke at outside of the US, and a very unique opportunity to see how the digital analytics industry is thriving elsewhere.
One thing that stood out to me: the analytics industry in Australia is a tight knit community with a ton of engagement via IAPA which is a similar organization to the Digital Analytics Association (DAA) in the US. It was great to meet and talk with everyone at this event and I walked away very impressed with the level of talent and enthusiasm that I saw.
The second thing that stood out to me: Twitter is still an up and coming medium for the analytics industry in Oz! @MicheleJKiss, @JimSterne and I seemed to dominate the twitter stream, tweeting our notes and inspiring quotes as is our norm at conferences in the US. I think Michele alone is responsible for at least a handful of attendees joining twitter and starting to tweet (hey you @buttlerk)!!
And now on to the highlights:
Data like diamonds: need a diamond to cut a diamond. In analytics, need diff tools to cut the data in diff ways. #eMetrics

Data like diamonds… yes.
Don't throw work over the fence to a vendor, have your analysts work side by side for knowledge sharing & learning #eMetrics #iapa #measure

Do you work with vendors? This is an important one!
Successful landing page tips: make your target audience see that you are talking to them (personalize!) #eMetrics #iapa #measure

The great visualizations always do:
The greatest value of a picture is when it forces us to notice what we never expected to see #eMetrics #IAPAconf #DataViz

YES –> Data is worthless without the interpretations, insight, & implications that analytical leaders provide #eMetrics #iapa #measure

AU #privacy law: if user requests data, have to provide, EVEN digital/cookie data, if you *could* link to PII @jodiesangster #eMetrics -Wow!

Common sources of failure: most orgs measure too many things, things measured are unimportant, important things not measured #eMetrics #iapa

And finally, some wise words:
Have fun, work w/ smart people & learn (while balancing the likelihood of spectacularly screwing up). Great advice S.Bennett #iapa #eMetrics
